Remicade Improves Symptoms But Does Not Prevent Structural Damage In AS

Posted on: 11/3/08

A study published in October 2008 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, states that infliximab (Remicade) does help alleviate symptoms and has other beneficial effects, but does not inhibit structural damage in ankylosing spondylitis.

Dr. van der Heijde of Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands, said that although disappointing, the results of the study were not unexpected (as this was also the case with etanercept), and "it is still very useful to prescribe TNF-blockers to patients with ankylosing spondylitis as these drugs have a major positive effect on signs and symptoms, physical function, and quality of life."
