Can structural damage be prevented in ankylosing spondylitis?
Posted on: 6/15/09
A review published in "Current Opionion In Rheumatology" examined whether structural damage can be prevented in ankylosing spondylitis.
The core of the issue is whether structural damage in the disease is indeed directly linked to the inflammation, which was thought to be the case, or if the structural damage is independent of the inflammation. If inflammation is the cause, then it is logical to believe medications that target the inflammation could prevent structural damage.
The researchers summarize, "Future research has to clarify whether structural damage can best be prevented by early and effective treatment of inflammation or whether new bone formation has to be targeted additionally."
