Periodontal disease in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Posted on: 4/26/10

According to wikipedia.org, periodontal diseases, "are those diseases that affect one or more of the periodontal tissues:

  1. alveolar bone
  2. periodontal ligament
  3. cementum
  4. gingiva

These include gingivitis and periodontitis.

A study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases looks at the frequency of periodontal disease (PD) in those with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

The authors conclude that "patients with AS have a significantly higher risk of PD, strongly suggesting the need for close collaboration between rheumatologists, periodontists and dental hygienists when treating patients with AS.
